Abstract
Ultrarefractories are produced by firing, in an oxidizing atmosphere, a mixture of alumina and silicon carbide crystals in which the proportion of particles under 100 microns are such that the ratio of alumina fires to silicon carbide fires is greater than four. A flux, e.g. a flouride of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal aluminium; or cryolite or mixtures thereof, may be added to the mixture. Mullite is stated to be formed and serves as a bond for the mixture. A temporary binder, e.g. dextrin, may also be present.
