Class 138 (2) In a washing machine having a perforated drum 5 rotatable about a horizontal axis in a liquid container 2 and provided with means for introducing air into the lower part of the drum, the wall of the drum 5 has alternate perforated and unperforated sections 6 and 8 respectively, and a baffle plate 9 is disposed at the forward end, in the direction of rotation of the drum, of each unperforated section 8. The perforated sections are broader than the unperforated sections, and each baffle plate is inclined towards its associated unperforated section. An air supply pipe 10 is connected to the pressure side of a vacuum cleaner and delivers air to the drum through an opening 12 in the container 2, this opening being of greater width than the unperforated sections 8. The air enters the drum 5 through the perforations and some is trapped by the baffle plates 9, causing rotation of the drum, the remainder of the air causing agitation of the clothes. A further baffle plate 13 spaced a small distance from the drum 5 improves the operation of the machine.
