Abstract

Unvulcanized natural rubber is softened by treatment with a per-compound, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, an alkyl hydroperoxide such as tert. butyl hydroperoxide, an acyl peroxide, in the presence of an organic compound containing a thiocarbonyl or mercapto group, e.g. thiourea, an alkylated thiourea, thiophenol, betanaphthyl mercaptan, thiacetamide, alphanaphthylthiacetamide, quinoline-2-thiol, mercaptothiazole, mercaptobenzthiazole, mercaptobenzimidazole, zinc diethyldithiocarbamate. The per-compound and the said organic compound may each be present in an amount from 0.02 to 10 per cent. by weight of the rubber. Specification 694,317 is referred to.
