Abstract

Unvulcanized rubber is softened by mechanical working in the presence of oxygen and a thiocarbonyl compound in which the thiocarbonyl carbon atom is directly linked to two nitrogen atoms. The thiocarbonyl compound may be 0.05-5.0 parts by weight per 100 parts of the rubber. Examples are concerned with masticating smoked sheet with thiourea, allylthiourea, ethylene thiourea, and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole.
