Abstract

Rubber is vulcanized with sulphur chloride in the presence of compounds of the general formula N R1 R11 R111 where R1 and R11 represent a bivalent organic grouping or two univalent organic groupings and R111 represents hydrogen or a univalent organic grouping of dithiocarboxylic type. In particular modifications (1) described R111 represents hydrogen, R11 represents .CS.NH-R1111 where R1111 is an aromatic radical, and R1 represents an aromatic hydrocarbon grouping. (2) R111 represents hydrogen and R1 and R11 represent C6H4.S.CS. (3) R1 and R11 represent two univalent alkyl groups or a bivalent organic radical and R111 represents .CSSX1 where X1 is a metal or a complex metallic radical, or an organic grouping of the aminothioformyl or dithiocarbonyl structure. The sulphur chloride may be applied to the rubber in fluid or in vapour form, if desired in admixture with a diluent such as carbon disulphide. Examples of compounds mentioned are diphenylguanidine, piperidine, piperidine - pentamethylenedithiocarbamate, mercaptobenzothiazole, zinc diethyldithiocarbamate, tetramethyl-thiuram-monosulphide.
