Abstract

Natural rubber is vulcanized by heating in a mould in admixture with sulphur, a vulcanization accelerator, and a peroxide of the formula: <FORM:0791095/V/1> in which R1, R2, R3, R11, R22 and R3 are selected from aliphatic, cycloaliphatic such as cycloalkenyl, aromatic, and aralkyl hydrocarbon radicals. The peroxide may comprise ditertiary butyl, ditertiary amyl, di(a , a -dimethylbenzl) (known as dicumyl), di (a , a dimethyl-p-chloro benzyl), di (a , a -dimethyl-2, 4 dichlorobenzyl), or -tertiarybutyl-1- methyl cyclohexyl peroxide, 2, 2, di-(tertiarybutyl-peroxy) butane, or a peroxide formed by the oxidation of a terpene hydrocarbon such as turpentine, a -pinene, p-menthane and pinane. The accelerator may comprise a mercaptothiazole, a thiazyl disulphide, a thiazole sulphenamide, a thiocarbamyl sulphenamide, a dithiocarbamate, a thiuram disulphide, a xanthate or dixanthate, a dithiodiacyl disulphide, or a nitrogen containing accelerator. Several of such compounds are specified. In examples the vulcanizable compositions comprise natural rubber, sulphur, dicumyl peroxide, morpholine-2-benzothiazolesulphenamide as accelerator, antioxidant, and other ingredients.
