Abstract
700,294. Stocks ; fixing bristles. MORTIMER, H. June 7, 1950 [March 15, 1950], No. 6478/50. Class 19 A base plate having bristle tufts with enlarged bases secured therein for forming into a brush is constructed from a substantially unyielding solid material and is formed on one face with one or more grooves or slots which are open at one end at least and are enlarged and shaped at their lower or inner portions so as to receive and co-operate with the enlarged tuft bases when these are slid into the grooves or slots from the open end or ends whereby the tufts are anchored against withdrawal in the direction of their length, there being sufficient space provided in the grooves or slots for the insertion therein of plastic or adhesive material to additionally fix the tuft bases. The bristles may be of any suitable fibre or filament, natural or artificial, e.g. nylon, which can be used to form an enlarged base for the tufts and the base plate may be of wood, metal, plastic or other suitable unyielding material and may be of any width according to the number of slots required, thus a grainer's dragging brush would require only one slot whereas a whitewash brush may have one, two, three or more slots. The bases of the bristle tufts may be enlarged either by fusing with heat or by sticking together with a plastic or adhesive material and will be inserted in the plate by sliding into the grooves and further fixed by pouring into the grooves a plastic adhesive which expands on cooling. The base plate is then fitted into a metal ferrule or stirrup and a handle inserted, e.g. as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The grooves or slots may be enlarged at the bottom by a longitudinal part-circular bore as shown in Fig. 2 or may be of inverted " T " form in which case the sides of the slots may either be parallel Fig. 6 (not shown) or may diverge upwardly as in Fig. 4. The tufts may be reinforced with pieces of wire or rod as indicated at 6.
