Abstract
418,967. Stapling. ZAHORANSKY, A., Todtnau, Schwarzwald, Germany. July 7, 1934, No. 20003. Convention date, July 8, 1933. [Class 89 (iii).] A method of fixing bristles consists in placing bundles of bristles nearly in line but with overlapping ends, doubling them at the overlapping parts, and thrusting them by a staple through a nozzle, whereby the short bunches produced by the doubling lie concealed between the long tufts, as in Fig. 4. Staples are bent round a shaper 18, Fig. 7, by shoulders on a plate 17 fixed to tool 3. After the withdrawal of the shaper 18, the plate 17 is moved forwards with the staple and enters a slot 19 in the nozzle 4. Just previous to this, the overlapping ends of two bundles of bristles are carried into the path of the plate from opposite sides, and a notch 18<a>, Fig. 6, compacts these bristles, thus permitting the feeders to engage the bristles near the centre without ill effects due to spreading of the bristles. Two bundles may arrive at the nozzle simultaneously, but it is preferred to make the one in the shallow notch arrive earlier and somewhat offset to the other, whereby the tufts acquire a twist. To ensure that the roots of the tufts are bent inwards and concealed, a nozzle 4, Fig. 9, is employed with a nose 20 and a recess 21 below it. The nose 20 pushes the root tips of one tuft further inwards than the long portion of the other tuft, which is bent in the recess 21 and is thus laid round the bent roots. In a modification for use with tufts without spread or twist, two narrow tufts are fed to the nozzle instead of a flat tuft and these are somewhat inclined to one another so that the two roots are slightly spread apart. The nozzle passage has on one side two opposite noses 20 with a shallow recess 21 so that the roots of the subdivided tuft are bent inwards by the noses and the long portions are laid round them by the recess 21. The long projecting ends are thus all of the same length without trimming.
