Abstract

699,747. Pneumatic conveyers; screw conveyers; step-by-step conveyers; hoppers. KOPPERS, GES., H. Oct. 31, 1950 [Oct, 31, 1949], No. 26563/50. Class 78 (i). In apparatus for transferring finely divided solid material, e.g. fuel, from a chamber at relatively low pressure to a chamber at higher pressure, the chambers are connected by a channel-like passage in which there is formed, by compression of the material, a gas impermeable sealing plug which preferably is pressed against a resistance member arranged at the high pressure end of the channel, the compressed material on or after transfer into the high pressure chamber being divided finely by a grinding device. The lower pressure chamber 4, Fig. 1, is connected to the high pressure chamber 10 by a cylindrical passage 5 which is constricted at 7. A.piston 6, which is reciprocated in the part 5 by a crank 8 and connecting rod 9, compresses the material therein into a plug and simultaneously discharges a part of the material from the constriction 7 into the chamber 10. The material may be compressed more than once. In a modification the material is forced by a worm 28, Fig. 2, into the constriction 32 leading to the high pressure chamber 33 and against a rotary grinding head 35, the shaft 36 of which is yieldably supported, e.g. by steel springs 41. Carrier gas is admitted at high pressure through approximately tangential nozzles into the enlargement 48 and conveys material through a branch 34 to a conduit. Another modification, Fig. 3, is designed for use with a receiving chamber under very high pressure. In this construction the material is fed and compressed by a reciprocating plunger 61 mounted in a yoke 62 which is reciprocated by cranks 66. The grinding head 73 is resiliently mounted as before. Powdered material falls from the chamber 75 through the pipe 86 into the chamber 87 from which it is forced by the worm 88 into the blast apparatus 89. In a further modification, Fig. 4, material from the hopper 115 falls on to a rotatable plate 117 from which it is swept by a plough 125 into a pipe 127 connected to the passage 105 in which the reciprocating plunger 106 works. The pressure to which the material is subjected is varied by adjusting the position of the pin 129. Material passes from the compression chamber 105 into the chamber 132 containing a rotary grinder 133, the ribs or teeth of which co-operate with ribs 135 on the walls. From this chamber material is forced by gas supplied by nozzles 146 through an annular passage between a pear-shaped member. 145 below and rotating with the grinder.
