Abstract
911,155. Compacting test materials. McRAE, J. L., and WISLOCKI, J. P. April 8, 1960, No. 12671/60. Class 87(2). In a machine for compacting test materials such as soils, the contents of a cylindrical mould 13 are subjected to compression between a lower ram 16 and an upper floating plate 18 and to a kneading action produced by a pair of rollers 29, 30 which gyrate about the axis of a shaft 14 and engage the flange 22 of a mould chuck 21 provided with cooling ducts 27, which is suspended by springs 28 thus causing the mould to oscillate so that its axis generates a cone. The rollers 29, 30 are mounted in a housing 9 which is rotated by gearing 11, the roller 29 being manually adjustable by rotating a screw 31 and the roller 30 being urged against the flange 22 by fluid pressure in a cylinder 36 which can be varied to adjust the pitch of the oscillations. Loading of the machine is accomplished by filling the mould 13 on a tray and pushing the mould into the chuck as far as stops 40 by actuating the ram 16 so that the material abuts the floating plate 18, subsequently sliding the tray from between the ram and the mould. Instruments are provided to indicate the pressure in the cylinder 36 and the pressure in the ram 16. Springs may replace the fluid pressure systems.
