Abstract

579,529. Packing granular material. QUAKER OATS Co. May 17, 1944, No. 9474. Convention date, June 18, 1943. [Class 94 (i)] In an apparatus in which loose compressible materials such as rolled oats, meal &c. are packed into containers by means of a rotating auger or propeller 22 arranged within a material feed tube 16 extending into the container 5 which is supported by a table 7 gradually lowered as the packing continues, stationary buffers such as 29 are arranged immediately above the auger to reduce rotation or turbulence of the material in this region, thus allowing of greater compression of the material into the container. The baffles may be fixed as shown to a stationary tube surrounding the auger shaft 20 or may be secured to the inner surface of the feed tube 6. The table 7 is positively lowered by screw and nut gear at a fixed predetermined speed to control the degree of compression, a quick return drive being provided for engaging an empty container with the tube 6.
