[Class 78 (i)] Means for feeding granular material into a receptacle 4, Fig. 1, in which the pressure is above that in the feeder, comprising a hopper 1 ; a feed throat 2 extending from the hopper ; a screw conveyer 3b extending through said feed throat and terminating adjacent the discharge end of the throat; and a lining 5 of resilient material within the throat engaged by the periphery of the screw and forming a valve to prevent back pressure from the receiver to the feeder. Coal material is forced from hopper 1 into manifold 4 containing high-pressure steam by screw 3b and backflow of steam along the screw is avoided by rubber lining 5 which fits closely over shoulder 3d of shaft 3 and over the tapering end of screw 3b. Backflow of steam from manifold 4 to hopper 1 along the screw is prevented by rubber pillow 6 which is supported by screws 12, 13 on support 7 the threaded end 7a of which is adjustable in the side of the manifold 4 and presses against rubber lining 5 to form a seal which yields as material is fed forward. Pillow 6 is inflated by gas or liquid which enters and leaves by pipes 7c, 7d. Fig. 3. Backflow of steam from manifold 4 to hopper 1 is prevented by rubber lining 5 being shaped to form a gland 5g which is pressed against shaft 3 by head of water 18. Cooling water is introduced at 16 and flows via pipes 17, 19 to annulus 14d from whence it passes through the circular series of holes 14f to the tube and lubricates the rubber lining in which the screw works.
