Abstract
116,939. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Seaman Waste Wood Chemical Co.). June 30, 1917. Charging and discharging.-In furnaces for distilling wood &c. the material treated is utilized to seal the retort after the air contained in the charge has been expelled therefrom by mechanical action. The carbonized material is also caused to seal the retort at the discharge end. As shown in connexion with a rotary retort, the material in a finely-divided state is delivered from the hopper 27 into a feed pipe in which is a reciprocating plunger 28. The charge is thus compressed in the feed pipe and in the neck 17 of the retort. The stroke of the plunger stops short of the inner wall of the mouth of the hopper, so that air can escape through the loose charge in the hopper. At the discharge end, the material falls into a pocket 39 with a screw conveyer which delivers it to a hopper above a reciprocating plunger 43 in the discharge pipe. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 204/82.
