Abstract

699,689. Rotary saws; grinding machines. KEARNEY & TRECKER CORPORATION. June 28, 1950 [July 18, 1949], No. 16141/50. Classes 60, 124 and 145 (ii). A radial machine tool which employs a rotary tool (a saw, or grinding wheel) may be used for stone cutting and wood routing as well as general sawing and grinding. The rotary tool is so carried that it may cut in a direction truly radial to the vertical supporting column whereby angular positioning of the tool is facilitated. A main column 14 carries a ram 23, the forward end of which carries a yoke 71 which can thus be adjusted radially. The yoke is pivoted about a vertical axis 74 and is offset so that a motor 65 is horizontally pivoted about the axis 73 and the saw or other tool 67 rotates in a radial plane passing through the axis 14 coincident with the vertical axis of the column 14. The tool can be set at an angle relative to the vertical by withdrawing plunger 76 and allowing it to re-engage one of a series of holes 77. As the saw axis is in the plane of the column axis it is possible to adjust the saw at an angle relative to the horizontal without the necessity of correcting for an unwanted bodily displacement of the saw. Side plates 116, 117 are pivotally mounted at 118 and function to guard the operator from contact with the tool. A work-supporting table 88 carries a ripping guide 89 and a slot 91 to receive a second, removable, guide 92. A plurality of cam-like locking devices 93 engage hardened buttons secured to the frame 92 to lock the latter in position. The saw is adjustable vertically by varying the position of the ram support and the vertical column (around which it can rotate) the column being movable in the housing 11.
