585,068. Wood cutting and working tools. BACKHOUSE, H., MENSFORTH, T., and FIRTH & J. BROWN, Ltd., T. Dec. 7, 1944, Nos. 21838/44 and 16647/45. [Classes 145 (i) and 145 (ii)] A transportable, handguided, power-driven tool for planing, sawing or routing wood is constructed with a driving- motor 12 arranged with its axis parallel to the direction of traverse of the tool 33 which is a rotary one driven by a chain-drive and a right angle worm drive arranged in a gear-box 43. The motor is secured by a strap 13 to a cradle 11 connected to the main body 10 of the tool, and the cutter projects through a slot and is mounted in bearings carried by slides 24 which are adjustably mounted in slots 25 in the body 10 and can be set to vary the depth of cut and the inclination of the cutting blades to the horizontal. The slides are held in adjusted position by screw-operated wedges with tongues guided by grooves, and the slides can be moved towards the driving-sprocket 45 so as to permit removal of the chain. The slots 25 are closed by solid bridge-pieces 18 at the front and at the top by a securing plate 28. The cutting- tool 33 is mounted between flanges 35, 36, Fig. 3, on a spindle 34, the flange 36 being detachable to facilitate removal of the slides and the bearings 38, 39 which are held in place by seal caps 42, 41. A handle 16 and handgrip 48 are provided and also an adjustable shoe 49 is fitted to the front of the tool. In a modification, Fig. 5, the driving-motor 12 and gear-box 43 are adjustable longitudinally to permit removal of the chain which is enclosed in a removable cover 71. The depth of cut is adjusted by pivotal movement of a sole-plate 63 which is provided with an aperture 65 for passage of the tool. The angle of the tool to the horizontal can be varied by mounting one of the bearings eccentrically and adjustably. The driving of the electric motor may be controlled by switches 78, 79 arranged in series and fitted on-the hand-grip 77 and handle 16. An air blast may be used to remove chips &c., and may be obtained from an air motor used to drive the tool.
