698,771. Rotary wood -chipping machines. OTTERSLAND, P. N. July 25, 1951, No. 17689/51. Class 145 (i). A wood-chipping machine comprises a rotary cutter disc having a plurality of knives, each knife being mounted in a knife holder secured to the cutter disc and the holder having angularly disposed abutment surfaces, one of which supports the knife' and a retainer bar, to which the knife is adjustably secured, and the other of which acts to take back thrust on the knife and retainer bar assembly. The cutter disc may be provided with a plurality of recesses to receive the holders for the knife assemblies, each knife being adjustably mounted in a retainer bar which is clamped in the holder by clamping means engaging the inner and outer edge portions of the retainer bar. The retainer bar forms an abutment for the knife and as the knife is adjusted outwardly in relation to the bar to compensate for wear, a backing means is used to fill the space between the knife back edge and the bar. The cutter disc 20 is provided with apertures 23 extending through the thickness of the disc and associated with each is a recess 25 in which the knives 35 and the retaining bars 36 are secured. The disc has a face plate secured to it, with corresponding slots, and this acts as a wear plate. The knives and retaining bars are secured in position by bolts 40 and clamping bars 50 (see Fig. 4). The knife holder 28 is formed with two limbs 29 (forming a seating for the knife) and 30 (forming an abutment for the rear of the knife). The knife holder seats in the Vee-groove in the disc 20. The knife is adjustably secured to the retainer bar 36 by bolts 45 and can be slid proud of the edge of the bar to compensate for wear and re-grinding. Backing bars 68, 65 can be fitted as shown when the knife is shortened. The rear of the backing bars is retained either as shown by a presser bar 60 or, in a modification, by an S-shaped spring acting against clamping bars 50.
