Abstract

393,669. Wood-working cutters. HARRIS, P., Forest Products Research Laboratory, Princes Risborough, Bucking- hamshire. Dec. 15, 1931, No. 34740. [Class 145 (i).] A rotary cutter for planing, moulding, &c. wood-working machines comprises a cutter block having a peripheral recess of arcuate outline in which a cutter holder having a portion of its outline of corresponding arcuate form is adjustably held, the cutter being removably mounted in the holder. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, the recess in the block D is greater than a semi-circle ; the holder C tapers slightly and has teeth E engaging teeth F in the recess, so that it can be set at various angular positions relative to the block. The cutter B is held against a flat surface b in the holder by a chip breaker bar J held in place by screws K having conical ends engaging inclined recesses in the front face of the bar J, so as to force it rearwardly. The rear edge u of the bar J engages two conical nuts L mounted on a screw-spindle M by means of which they can be adjusted, the spindle having a collar Q fitting recesses p, q in the block and bar J respectively to prevent axial movement of the spindle. Alternatively the chip breaker bar may be raised or lowered by means of set screws in the base of the slot in the holder C. The holder C is provided with a saw cut c to facilitate locking. In another form, Fig. 3, the recess d in the block D is less than a semi-circle, and the cutter holder R mounted in the recess carrier screws S provided with washers T engaging surfaces f in the block by means of which the holder is clamped in its angularly adjusted position. The cutter B is held in the holder R by means of the chip breaker bar J which has an inclined surface engaged by the conical head of a screw K which urges the bar rearwardly and clamps it against the cutter. The cutting edge of the cutter B is arranged to coincide with the centre of curvature of the recess d so that the distance of said edge from the axis of rotation of the block is unaffected by angular adjustment of the holder R no adjusting means for the chip breaker bar and cutter being therefore necessary.
