Abstract

698,355. Lighting fittings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FERGUSON, H. M. March 12, 1952 [March 14, 1951], No. 6172/51. Class 75(iv) A lighting fitting, such as an aerodrome runway fitting, arranged to provide a vertically narrow beam of light in a generally horizontal direction, comprises a watertight enclosure, for a light source 21, consisting of upper and lower casing parts 10, 12 which slidably interfit to ensure proper axial alignment on assembly means being provided, to give a watertight seal therebetween when assembly of these parts is completed, a cover 24 supported by ribs 23 from the upper casing part 10 and an annular transparent member, 26 disposed in watertight fashion between the said cover 24 and the upper casing part 10. As shown the two casing parts 10, 12 are bolted together to compress a packing 13, a cable gland 16 being provided in the lower part 12 and the upper part 10 having a flange 11 to mount flush with the surface in which the fitting is mounted. The cover 24 is bolted to opposed pairs of ribs 23, upstanding from the upper part 10, to clamp the transparent member 26 between the cover 24 and the flange 11, watertight gaskets 27, 28 being provided at the bearing surfaces. The ribs 23 are arranged asymetrically to provide opposed pairs of spaces of different widths. To mitigate light obstruction by the ribs 23, lateral spread of light is effected by forming the annular member 26, which may be of glass, with uniformly curved concave flutes 29 separated by sharp ridges. To effect a maximum intensity of light distribution at an angle of 2 degrees above the horizontal the outer surface of the member 26 is of convex form. Arcuate colour filters, refractors, or shutters 30 may be arranged between the ribs 23 and held in position by wire springs 31. A reflector 22 secured to the lower part 12 to surround the lower portion of a lamp bulb 21 is dimensioned so that the casing parts 10, 12 may be separated, for access to the lamp, without damage to the reflector.
