Abstract
697,951. Piston and stuffing-box packing. ELECTRO-HYDRAULICS, Ltd. Jan. 25, 1950 [Jan. 26, 1949], No. 2192/49. Classes 122(i) and 122(v) Annular sealing devices are cut from a composite sheet comprising superposed layers of different resiliency bonded together, and are distorted torsionally when inserted in a groove in one of the two members to be sealed, so that the sealing device presses against both members whilst tending to return to its original formation. The bonded layers may be rubber and metal, or rubber of different degrees of resiliency. As shown a washer cut from a sheet composed of two layers of rubber of different degrees of resiliency is inserted in a groove in a piston 10 and distorted from its original shape 12 shown in dotted lines to a nearly cylindrical shape, so that the layer of harder material, now surrounding the other, is pressed against the cylinder. Backing rings of hard material, e.g. metal split rings, may be provided on one or both sides of the washers.
