An electrode for an electrolytic condenser comprises a metal strip having its lateral portions folded back on itself. This increases the effective anode area and available capacity for a given space. In Fig. 1, the porous, metallic anode 11 has portions 12 and 13 folded back, and the cathode 14 is separated from the anode by paper insulating strips 15 and 16. Portions 12 and 13 may overlap or abut. The assembly may be coiled, or stacked in sections to form the condenser unit. Alternatively, insulation may be provided by spacer coatings directly on the anode surface. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the cathode 24 is placed outside the folded portions 22 and 23. The edges of the metal strip may taper off in thickness, so that when folded back the anode section has uniform thickness as shown in Fig. 7. Holes may be provided in the anode material along the line of fold, to facilitate impregnation with electrolyte. Terminal tabs may be provided which are connected to both centre and lateral portions of the anode.
