Abstract

539,587. Insulators. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and KIRKWOOD, I. W. A. March 15, 1940, No. 4876. [Class 36] An insulator having stress-grading layers C embedded in the insulating material and a thicker layer D connected to the exterior, for draining surge current, has this layer shielded by the adjacent stress-grading layer, and a conductive path F is provided between them for draining the normal capacity current. In addition, a distributed path, for example capacitative, is provided of suitable impedance for taking the high-frequency surge current. In the example the layer D is directly connected to the earthed support H and the path F may be constituted by a high resistance metallic strip wound in with the insulating paper &c. the distributed path between the grading layer and the layer D may be formed by mixing conductive material with the insulation between these layers or a material may be used with a negative voltage-coefficient of resistance. Similar surge-draining layers and arrangements may be provided at places in the insulator other than the outside, as indicated at D <6>, D<7>.
