Abstract

697,637. Supplying current to rotating conductors. PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. March 7, 1952 [March 9, 1951], No. 5715/51. Class 38 (i). In a slip-ring and brush gear assembly for conveying current to apparatus mounted on, for example, a ship's propeller shaft, the slip-rings a comprise spring belting surrounding a flexible insulating base b of paper, cloth or tape which is wrapped round the shaft. The brush gear comprises a rectangular frame d with transverse leafsprings g carrying collector blocks h fitted with carbon brushes h<SP>1</SP> or rollers and brushes. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement of brush gear wherein the springs g carry arms h each carrying a roller i and, brush j. On opposite sides of frame d are hooks e to which are attached guy ropes f in turn attached to the structure surrounding the shaft to maintain the brush gear in position over the slip-rings. Slip-rings in the form of conductive material printed, sprayed or painted on the insulating base may be employed, with capacitative coupling between them and the brush gear, the latter in this case having wheels which ride on the shaft or on rings of spring belting snapped on the shaft.
