Abstract

954,468. Electro-adhesive couplings. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Nov. 16, 1962 [Dec. 5, 1961], No. 43373/62. Heading H1P. [Also in Divisions B6 and F2] A rotary electro-adhesive coupling for a wire printer (see Division B6) comprises an electrostatic clutch rotor 160, Fig. 6, having a peripheral surface formed from a layer 65 of electro-adhesive material, such as a semi-conductive material including rubber, phenolic resin, asbestos and carbon black. The layer 65 which is superimposed on a base of conductive material is connectible to an electrical circuit, which includes the clutch band 62, attached with one end to a print bar 50 and the other to a stationary peg 63. The clutch band 62 is of spring steel and has its under surface in continuous contact with the outer surface of the layer 65. On application of a voltage between the layer and the band an electro-adhesion is obtained causing the band to be mechanically displaced by the rotating rotor 160. The effectiveness of the electro-adhesive attachment is improved by applying a silicone fluid lubricant to the surface of the layer 65. Specification 843,949 is referred to.
