Abstract
A process for the production of pure titanium from titanium containing combined oxygen and nitrogen comprises treating the impure titanium with molten zinc, cadmium or lead or a mixture of two or more of these metals to form a liquid titanium alloy, separating the said liquid titanium alloy from undissolved material and subjecting the alloy to distillation to isolate the purified titanium metal. After separation of undissolved material the liquid may be cooled to form a titanium rich solid phase which is separated and subjected to distillation. The impure titanium may be treated with zinc at a temperature of 850 DEG C-950 DEG C e.g. in the presence of an amount of calcium slightly in excess of that amount chemically equivalent to the impurities intially present. Separation of undissolved material may be by filtration through a bed of graded alumina.
