Abstract

1,140,339. Purifying combustible gas. GEL. SENKIRCHENER BERGWERKE-A.G. 9 Jan., 1968 [13 Jan., 1967], No. 1195/68. Heading C5E. [Also in Division B1] Ammonia and hydrogen sulphide are removed from gas mixtures containing them as impurities, e.g. from coal distillation gas, by passing the mixture by line 4 into absorber 1 where it rises in countercurrent to an ammoniacal liquor which enters absorber 1 at 5 and 18. The partly desulphurized gas stream then passes by line 15 to absorber 2 where it is mixed with H 2 S-free ammonia gas which enters at 6, and rises therewith in countercurrent to the effluent water stream 16 from absorber 3. The wholly desulphurized gas stream then passes by line 17 to absorber 3 where it is washed with water which enters at 7, and optionally also with ammoniacal " coal water " which enters at 8, so that all the ammonia present is scrubbed out of the gas stream. The effluent liquor in sump 22 passes partly to column 10, where the bottom product is concentrated to 60-70% ammonia content and passed by line 5 back to absorber 1, and partly first to column 11 and then to column 12. the overhead ammonia gas from the latter being passed back to absorber 2. The overhead product from columns 10 and 11 comprises H 2 S.
