Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare β-methylnaphthalene useful as a raw material of dyes, pharmaceuticals, vitamin K, etc., in high purity, by distilling an oil fraction containing β-methyl-napthalene under controlled naphthalene content, and subjecting the resultant distillate to countercurrent continuous crystallization.
CONSTITUTION: An oil fraction containing β-methylnaphthalene (pref. coal tar fration having a boiling point range of 200W300°C) is distilled to obtain β- methylnaphthalene fraction having a β-methylnaphthalene content of ≥60wt%, pref. 70W90wt% and a naphthalene/β-methylnaphthalene weight ratio of ≤0.1, pref. ≤0.05. The β-methylnaphthalene fraction is continuously crystallized to obtain β-methylnaphthalene. The continuous crystallization is carried out by cooling the fraction in the upper cooling zone maintained at -5W+15°C, precipitating the crystallized crystals to the lower heating zone maintained at 31W 34.4°C, and extracting the molten β-methylnaphthalene from the heating zone.
