Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of dyes, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, etc., by distilling a quinolines-containing fraction having relatively low isoquinoline content to obtain a concentrated isoquinoline fraction having a specific composition range, and crystallizing the fraction continuously.
CONSTITUTION: Quinolines-containing fraction is distilled keeping the isoquinoline-content to ≥50wt% (pref. ≥60wt%) and a quinoline/isoquinoline ratio to ≤0.2 (pref. ≤0.05) by weight. The concentrated isoquinoline fraction thus obtained is continuously crystallized with a counter-current continuous crystallization refiner (pref. cooling the fraction at -20W+20°C, precipitating the separated isoquinoline crystals, and melting and extracting the crystals) to separate and recover isoquinoline. The isoquinoline-containing fraction used as the starting material of the concentrated isoquinoline fraction is pref. the basic coal tar fraction obtained by extracting and washing the fraction having a boiling point of 200W280°C with an acid.
