Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compounds useful as medicines, in simple reaction processes, in high purity and yield, by separating trans species from a cis- and trans- 1-methyl-4-isohexylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid mixture as a clathrate compound.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of cis- and trans-1-methyl-4-isohexylcyclohexanecarboxylic acids is added to a saturated hot methanol solution of urea or thiourea, cooled after heating at 40W65°C for 5W15min, and separated into its constituents by filtration. The molar ratio of urea or thiourea to the trans species of the carboxylic acid is 10W14 to 1. A clathrate compound of trans-1-methyl-4-isohexylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid (trans species) thus obtained as a residue is isolated by adding dilute aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide to the clathrate compound, and subsequently making acidic with hydrochloric acid. The cis species can be separated from methanol layer of the filtrate.
