Abstract

The sides of a resin-bonded grinding wheel are coated with metal in granular condition to a density of at least 0.004 grams per square centimetre; the metal is selected from the group consisting of antimony, bismuth, cadmium, gallium, indium, lead, thallium and tin and alloys of two or more of these. In the manufacture of a metal-coated cutting-off wheel with a phenolic resin bond, eight-pound wood pulp paper is first coated with tin by spreading on the paper a resinous suspension comprising powdered tin, powdered phenolic resin and isopropyl alcohol and then drying under heat lamps. The coated paper is placed in the mould below and above the mixture of abrasive and phenolic resin, so that the coatings are secured to the wheel during moulding.
