812,850. Moulding abrasive wheels. NORTON GRINDING WHEEL CO. Ltd. June 3, 1957 [June 7, 1956], No. 17532/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXIII] An. abrasive cut-off wheel (Group XXIII) consisting of layers 41, 45 of open mesh glass and tissue or like paper pressed to both sides of a layer of abrasive grit bonded in a thermosetting resin, such as phenol-formaldehyde, rubber, &c. is formed in a mould comprising upper and lower plates 53, 50 and an outer band 51. A layer of paper 45, and a disc of glass cloth 41, which has previously been given a starch finish and impregnated with a phenolic resin varnish, are placed on the bottom plate 50 of the mould which is rotated on a turntable while the resin 42 containing the grit is evenly spread over the glass cloth. The turntable is then stopped and a second disc of glass cloth 41, tissue paper 45 and the top plate placed on the resin bond and the whole pressed so that the glass cloth and abrasive grit are integrally bonded together. After removal from the mould, the wheel has its sides roughened by being pressed between wire mesh screens before being cured by baking in an oven. A plurality of wheels may have their sides roughened before being cured by being assembled in a stack with wire mesh screens positioned adjacent the sides of the wheels, adjacent screens being separated by steel plates, and pressing the whole together.
