Abstract
446,037. Grinding-wheels. NORTON CO., New Bond Street, Worcester, Massachusetts, U.S.A. March 5, 1935, No. 6884. Convention date, March 5, 1934. [Class 60] [See also Group V] A thin grinding-wheel, employed for cutting- off or making deep narrow cuts has on its flat side faces a multiplicity of projecting abrasive teeth, whereby binding of the wheel in the cut, overheating, and breakage of the wheel are avoided. The wheel, comprising abrasive grains and a bond, for example sodium silicate or an organic bond including resins, synthetic resins, or rubber, is formed in a mould, and before curing is removed to a plate 34, a flat sheet 32 of wire screen being placed beneath the wheel, and another upon the upper face thereof and pressure is applied by a top plate 36 to cause the sheets 32 to impress a pattern of the screen on the wheel faces, thereby causing abrasive grains, or groups of grains 13 to rise up or be extruded on the interstices of the screens ; stops 40 prevent the screens from being impressed too deeply in the wheel, and the wheel is cured with the screens in position thereon. In place of screens, shaped presser plates, rollers, &c. may be used to form the teeth on the wheel faces. Alternatively, the layer of abrasive and bond may be coated on a separately manufactured wheel before treatment as above.
