454,474. Grinding-wheels. NORTON GRINDING WHEEL CO., Ltd., Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. Dec. 17, 1935, No. 35025. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1934. [Class 60] A grinding-wheel suitable for cutting deep narrow grooves and for cutting off work lengths comprises a main body 14 of bonded abrasive grains shaped as a disc having integrally secured to one or both sides a disc 16 having sharp abrasive cutting teeth projecting from its sides. The discs 16 preferably consist of thin, porous, waterproof paper or other fibrous material to which abrasive grains are secured with their major axes projecting outwardly. The discs 16 are preferably secured to the body 14 by the same bonding material as that used for bonding the abrasive grains of the body 14, e.g. rubber, shellac, resin, or a synthetic resin such as a phenol condensation product. The grinding wheel may be produced by the apparatus shown in Fig. 2 comprising a bed 25 supporting a press-plate 26, a retaining ring 28 and a hub 30. An annular body 34 consisting of a mixture of abrasive grains and unmatured bond is placed on the hub 30 between upper and lower discs 32, 35 of abrasive fibrous material and pressure is applied by means of a press plate 38 with sufficient heat to cause the bond of the body 34 to permeate the discs 32, 35 and to become matured.
