Abstract

Wheels. - A composite grinding-wheel is composed of more than one quality or kind of abrasive material, the different qualities being in the form of layers disposed edgewise of the grinding-face, whereby the wear of the edges and corners of the wheel is retarded. The Figure shows a peripheral grinding-wheel having outer layers a of abrasive material of finer grit and greater hardness of bonding than the intermediate layer b, the layers a being disposed edgewise of the grinding-face c. As applied to a cup-shaped wheel, the harder layer is disposed in the form of an outer peripheral ring; or according to the Provisional Specification, outer and inner peripheral rings of harder abrasive may be used. Segmental blocks for built-up wheels, may have the harder layer on the outer convex side, or the layer may be extended to the lateral sides, or may form a complete band enclosing coarser and softer abrasive material.
