Abstract
493,186. Grinding-wheels; moulding. NORTON GRINDING WHEEL CO., Ltd. Jan. 8, 1938, No. 651. Convention date, Jan. 12, 1937. [Class 60] [Also in Group V] A composite grinding-wheel is made by moulding a heat-settable material to form a support, separately moulding a mixture of abrasive grains and heat-settable material to form an abrasive ring, heating the ring to set it in its final non-plastic condition, and securing the ring to the support in a pressure mould. The support may be heated to set it prior to assembly with the ring, a heat-settable cement being then interposed between the ring and the support. Alternatively, the support may be heated after assembly with the ring in the pressure mould, being caused to flow by the pressure into integral union with the ring. In this case, heat-settable cement may or may not be interposed between the ring and the support. The heatsettable material and cement mav be a resinoid or vulcanizable rubber compound. The cement may take the form of impregnated paper. Fig. 2 shows a pressure mould by which an abrasive ring 10 is secured to the side face of a supporting plate 12 with interposed cement 14. Fig. 3 shows a pressure mould by which an abrasive rim 25 is secured to the periphery of a central support 24, with interposed cement 33, the pressure plate 30 of the mould acting only on the side face of the support 24.
