Abstract

Small pieces of solid fuel are agglomerated by coating the pieces of fuel with an aqueous dispersion of a polymer of vinyl acetate, with or without other monomers, wherein the vinyl acetate comprises at least 95% of the total monomer content, forming the fuel into blocks, e.g. by moulding and drying the blocks, e.g. in a current of air. The adhesive may comprise a non-ionic aqueous dispersion of a homopolymer of vinyl acetate containing up to 15% dibutylphthalate. A protective colloid of up to 8% polyvinyl alcohol may be used in the adhesive and adhesive, which preferably has a resin content of 44-57%, may be mixed with powdered fuel in the proportion of 60:40 before being applied to the pieces of solid fuel. The fuel to be agglomerated may be coal, coke, anthracite, or semi-coke and may be coated with the adhesive by tumbling in a drum. Preferably the weight of adhesive is between 2 and 4% of the weight of the fuel.
