Abstract

697,319. Two-part couplings. TELEPHONE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. March 21, 1951 [March 21, 1950], No. 7014/50. Class 38 (i). A socket for a three-pin plug has a shutter or shutters moved in a predetermined direction upon initial insertion of the plug to uncover the earth contact, and moved in the same plane in a different direction upon further insertion of the plug, to uncover the current-carrying contacts. The socket comprises a base 14 screwed to a metal saddle 11 which is fixed to a front plate having rectangular openings for receiving the three plug pins, Fig. 1 (not shown). The shutter 23 has a slot 23a co-operating with a pin 24 on the base 14 and is urged to the position shown by a spring 25 anchored at 14b and wrapped round a pin 26 on the shutter. In this position a chamfered shutter surface 23c covers the earthing socket contact 16a and the current-carrying contacts 15a are shielded by the main shutter body. Insertion of the plug causes the longer earth pin to engage the surface 23c and rotate the shutter so that the slot 23a is vertical and chamfered shutter surfaces 23d overlie the contacts 15a. The earth pin passes through a shutter cut-away portion 23b and further insertion of the plug causes engagement between the current-carrying pins and the surfaces 23d whereby the shutter moves rectilinearly to uncover the contacts 15a, the slot 23a permitting this movement. A metal insert 27 reduces the friction in the engagement of the earth pin. The saddle 11 carries the earth contact 16a and a screw for connection to an earth wire. In Fig. 3A the shutter 123 comprises two parts connected by a spring 125 and having chamfered surfaces 123c, 123d. Insertion of the earth pin into the socket contact 116 causes bodily displacement of the shutter against restoring means not shown. Further insertion of the plug causes the shutter ends 123a to be moved inwardly so that they overlap whilst the lower ends pivot about the earth pin, and the other pins enter the contacts 115.
