Abstract

697,106. Skew-rolling. CARDING SPECIALISTS (CANADA), Ltd. Nov. 1, 1951 [Nov. 1, 1950], No. 26618/50. Class 83 (iv). The pressure exerted between a pair of rollers in which one or both has a predetermined load applied to the ends of the shaft carrying the roller is distributed evenly along the length of the rollers by arranging the roller axes to cross one another at their common central point at such an angle in relation to the known bending moment of the roller or rollers that under a known pressure load the roller surfaces contact correctly from end to end. An upper roller a is journalled at its ends in selfaligning bearings c, d, carried by bearing blocks c<SP>1</SP>, d<SP>1</SP> which are movable vertically in slots c<SP>3</SP>, d<SP>3</SP>, fixed members c<SP>4</SP>, d<SP>4</SP>, the blocks being located longitudinally by cover-plates c<SP>2</SP>, d<SP>2</SP>. A lower roller b is journalled in fixed bearings (not shown). A load may be applied on the blocks c<SP>1</SP>, d<SP>1</SP>, by hydraulic plungers i, Fig. 2. The blocks c<SP>1</SP>, d<SP>1</SP> are narrower than the slots c<SP>3</SP>, d<SP>3</SP>, and each of them has a vertical slot c<SP>5</SP>, d<SP>5</SP> offset from the centre. In each of the slots c‹, d<SP>5</SP>, there engages the head e<SP>1</SP>, or f of a micrometer screw e or f, whereby the axis of the upper roller a may be adjusted to any desired angular relation with regard to the axis of the lower roller b. A graduated scale may be provided to facilitate the setting of the roller a relative to given loads. The lower roller may be angularly adjustable and the upper roller fixed or both may be adjustable. A scraper g, which acts on the surface of the upper rolls, is carried eccentrically in rotatable members h, h so that it may be set accurately to occupy an angular position corresponding to that of the roller a.
