Patented July 27, 1943 2,325,313 ADJUSTABLE ROLLING mu. GUIDE Umbert F. Corsini, Worcester, Mass., assignor to The American Steel and Wire Company of New I Jersey, a corporation of New Jersey Application October 24, 1941, Serial No. 416,425
3 Claims. (CI. 80-51) This invention relates to improvements in adjustable guides for rolling mills. and more particularly to adjustable guide boxes for a rod mill or the like.
In rod mills and the like, multiple pass rolls are used, the work being guided to a selected pass or passes and then to other passes when those first selected become worn. Thus, it is desirable to have the guide box or boxes adjustable along the rolls in such a manner as to expedite such pass changes with the requisite accuracy of alignment of the guides and passes.
It is a prime object of my invention to provide an improved guide of the character stated capable of ready and accurate adjustment in relation to the roll passes or grooves, thereby saving time and effort in the recurring operation of pass changin Further objects are to provide a device of the character stated which possesses both simplicity and durability; to provide a device which may be readily applied to existing rolling mills; and to provide for the adjustment of the guides in direct relation to the pass spacing on the rolls.
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the receiving side of a rod mill stand, showing the application of my invention thereto;
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the line II-II of Fi 1.
Refering to the drawings, 2 designates the roll housings of a rod mill or the like, rotatably Guide boxes II are slidably mounted in said recesses 8 between the rails 9 and ill of the receiving side frame, bearing on the rail ill for nonrotating support. As illustrated in Fig. 1, two of said boxes may be employed, and as preferred may be connected together as at I2 in the proper spacing according to the number of grooves or passes 5 in the rolls. Obviously, single guide boxes ll may also be employed when desired. Guide boxes II are also slidably mounted on the file guide rail ill on the delivery side of the For the purpose of translating the guide boxes H on the frames 8, each of said frames mounts a screw l3 Journaled by its ends in bearings H on the frame 6 outwardly beyond the terminals of the guide members III. Each guide box includes a forwardly extending foot l5 threaded at l6 to receive the screw I 3. The axis of the screw l3 and its engagement with the boxes I I is in advance of the face of the frame 6 so as to be readily mounted on said frame, and the said axis is disposed below the pass line of the mill so as not to interfer with the passage of the rod or work.
The pitch of the thread of said screw I3 is equal to the axial distance between the center lines of the grooves or passes I of the rolls. Hence, upon mounting the box or boxes H and the screw l3 initially for alignment of said box or boxes with the groove or grooves 5 of the rolls, upon rotating said screw through one revolution, the box or boxes may be accurately moved to alignment mounting a pair of rolls 3 and l in the usual man- As illustrated, the said rolls ar formed with a plurality of passes or grooves 5 having the desired configuration in accordance with the rod to be rolled thereby, said grooves being spaced equally along the length of the rolls.
My invention provides for the mounting and adjustment of one or more guide boxes transversely of the pass line of the mill, and to this end, includes horizontal-guide frames 6 extending between and secured by their ends to the roll housings 2, as by means of screws I, one of said frames being mounted on each of the receiving and delivery sides of the rolls. The frame on the receiving side is horizontally apertured at 8 and includes an upper rail 9 and a lower guide rail l0 defining said aperture. The guide or frame on the delivery side omits the ,said upper rail to permit free assage of the rod in case of a cobble or the like.
with the next adjacent groove or'grooves 5.
Each screw l3 extends at one end thereof for engagement by a hand crank I! for rotation of said screw. By indexing the initial position of the handle I! or screw l3,'the box or boxes il may be readily adjusted along'the rolls 3 and 4 between grooves 5 by rotation of the crank or screw into register with the index mark.
In order to rigidly secure the box or boxes H in adjusted alignment with the roll passes on the receiving side of the mill, the upper rail 9 of the frame 6 is slotted at l8 for receiving locking screws l9- threaded into the upper ends of the boxes I I. When said screws l9 are tightened upon the rail '8, the boxes Il may be securely held in their selected position. Due to the ample bearing surfaces between the boxes II and rails 8 and 9, and the locking means l9, the boxes will be securely positioned in proper relation to the pass line of the mill,
As shown in Fig. 2, 20 designates the conventional form of guide secured in the boxes on the receiving side of the mill, and 2| indicates the form of guide secured in the boxes on the delivery side of the mill, all of said guides being secured in their respective boxes H in the conventional manner.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided an adjustable guide means for rod mills and the like which may be easily and accurately adjusted for relation thereof with the selected grooves or passes of the rolls. Actual practice has shown that my invention effects a material saving in time and cost of mill operation, and results in an appreciable increase in production.
The invention has the further advantage of permitting the operator to readily make slight corrections in guide alignment with the roll passes to correct undesirable conditions which occur in operation. Thus, when it is observed that the rod is being rolled with a full side, the condition may be quickly remedied by slight guide adjustment by means of the screws I3.
Various changes and modifications are contemplated within the scope of the following claims.
I claim: 1. An adjustable guide for rolling mills having with the box for translation of the latter on the frame, said screw being mounted on the frame beneath the pass line of the mill, the pitch of said screw being equal to the axial distance between the center lines of the roll grooves, whereby the guide box may be selectively aligned with a roll groove by complete rotations of said screw, the length of the frame and the screw permitting adjustment of the guide box substantially throughout the width of the rolls.
.multiple grooved rolls, including a horizontal 2. An adjustable guide for rolling mills having multiple grooved rolls, including a horizontal guide frame having a pair of spaced rails disposed transversely of the pass line of the mill, a guide box slidably mounted on the rails in nonrotatable relation, and a rotatably mounted adjusting screw having threaded engagement with the box for translation of the latter on the frame, said screw being mounted on the frame and spaced from the pass line of the mill, the pitch of the screw being equal to the axial distance between the center lines of the grooves on the rolls, whereby the guide box may be selectively aligned with a roll groove by complete rotations of said screw, the length of the frame and the screw permitting adjustment of the guide box substantially throughout the width of the rolls.
3, An adjustable guide for rolling mills having multiple grooved rolls, including a horizontal guide frame having upper and lower rails disposed transversely of the pass line of the mill, a pair of spaced guide boxes slidably mounted on the frame and disposed between said rails in nonrotatable relation, said guide boxes being spaced apart transversely of said pass line in alignment with a pair of spaced grooves in said rolls, a rotatably mounted adjusting screw having threaded engagement with the boxes for translation of the latter on the frame in said spaced relation, said screw being mounted on the frame beneath the pass line of the mill, the pitch of said screw being equal to the axial distance between the center lines of the roll grooves, whereby the guide boxes may be selectively aligned with pairs ing means on the boxes coacting with one .of the said rails of the frame for securing theboxes in adjusted position.
