Abstract

696,601. Hydraulic dampers. GIRLING, Ltd. Feb. 25, 1952 [Feb. 24, 1951], No. 4554/51. Class 108 (iii). In a telescopic hydraulic damper of the type in which a seal 20 for the piston-rod 12 is provided at the outer end of an annular space 19, in a closure 13 for the working cylinder, the space 19 is connected by a pipe or tube 27 to the lower part of a recuperation chamber 16. Thus liquid passing the piston rod is kept out of contact with air in the upper part of the recuperation chamber 16, and frothing is avoided. A garter spring 30 having its ends hooked around an annular groove in the tube 27, provides a baffle at or below the liquid level in the chamber 16. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), there are two verticallyspaced baffles 30. Instead of the chamber 16 being concentric with the cylinder 10, it may comprise a closed longitudinally - extending chamber on one side of the cylinder.
