Abstract

677,857. Hydraulic shock - absorbers. BOURCIER DE CARBON, C.M.L.L. July 13, 1950 [July 13, 1949], No. 17583/50. Class 108(iii) A hydropneumatic shock absorber comprises a cylinder closed at each end and divided by a partition into a working chamber filled with liquid and containing a piston and a compensating chamber filled with liquid and air, the partition having valved passages therein for controlling the flow of liquid in both directions and the compensating chamber containing means for preventing any substantial entrainment of air in the liquid as a result of turbulence of the liquid created by passage of the liquid through the partition. As shown, oil entering a compensating chamber 1, through orifices 5, is deflected by a partition 3 which may comprise a single rigid or flexible flange providing the annular space 4 for the passage of the oil into the upper part of the chamber. The passage 4 and partition 3 may be replaced by a fluid-tight partition of material such as rubber or by the disposition within the chamber 1 of a rubber or the like air-filled bag. In another arrangement, the chamber 1 may be provided, preferably above the orifices 5, with a mattress of latex foamed rubber or the like spongy material having open or closed voids or masses of felt or wool or the like.
