Abstract
726,898. Hydraulic shock absorbers. WASDELL, W. K. July 4, 1952 [July 14, 1951], No. 16749/51. Class 108 (3). In a direct - acting shock absorber which incorporates a flexible gas container 16 which functions to compensate for changes in volume of the working liquid due to changes in temperature, and changes in volume of the working chambers of the shock absorber due to the entry and withdrawal of the piston rod 15a, the chamber 17 in the shock absorber for the reception of the container 16 is constructed in two complementary parts 18, 19. The piston 15 of the shock absorber comprises one or more ports 15d controlled by a flap valve 25 having four spaced orifices 25a which register with an annular channel 15b in the piston. A port or ports 15c connect the channel 15b with the underside of the piston and are controlled by a flap valve 26. A sealing ring 21 for the piston rod 15a is loaded by springs 23 which abut a plate 24. The plate 24 is retained by a shoulder 14e in the bore of the cylinder 14, but may be lifted off the shoulder by pressure in the cylinder 14 to increase the load on the sealing ring 21. The chamber 17 is formed by a member 18 having a hemispherical lower surface, and a threaded closure member 19 having a corresponding hemispherical surface. A port 18c in the member 18 connects the chamber 17 with main cylinder space. In a modification (Fig. 12, not shown), the port 18c is replaced by a central continuously-open port, and diametrically-opposed ports covered by a flap valve which controls flow from the chamber 17 to the cylinder, and prevents flow in the opposite direction. The damping medium may be a solution of synthetic uncured rubber in mineral oil.
