Abstract
696,456. Delivering measured quantities of liquids. PILLIN, Ltd., J. B., and EARLY, K. C. July 18, 1952 [July 18, 1951], No. 16996/51. Class 106 (v). Apparatus for delivering measured quantities of liquids,. particularly oil, petrol or water to vehicles in an assembly line, comprises a supply tank 81, a pump 82, an accumulator 83 (or, alternatively, a pressurized ring main), a by-pass relief valve 111 and, fitted in a cabinet 110, a valve 84 which controls the supply of the liquid to one side of a free piston 2 in a measuring chamber 1 and directs the measured quantity delivered.on the other side through a hose to a delivery nozzle 86. A heating jacket 23 surrounds the chamber and a rod 11 extending into the chamber to provide an abutment 9 for limiting the piston stroke is adjustable by a handwheel 21 on a lead screw 20 engaging a nut 12 secured to the rod. The nut 12 and the rod 11 are prevented from rotating by a flange 14 which slides on a pair of guide rods 17, one of which is provided with a scale co-operating with a vernier plate 22 on the flange. Initial compensation for small variations in size of the measuring chamber may be made by placing washers on the chamber or by adjusting the flange 14 on the nut 12 and then securing it by locknuts 16. The inner rotary member of the control valve is turned step-bystep through 90 degrees by a ratchet mechanism which is operated manually or automatically by passage of the vehicles. Control passages and slots at 90 degrees to each other in the inner rotary member and ports in the body of the valve are duplicated by diametrically-opposite passages, slots and ports, the ports being interconnected to balance the pressure on each side of the inner member. The delivery nozzle 86 incorporates a spring-loaded shut-off valve 74 and an anti-drip valve 75 held on a seat 76 by a light spring 77. A connection having a normally-closed valve may be provided between the ends of the measuring chambers so that, when setting the abutment, the liquid displaced by the movement of the piston may be directed to the other side of the piston and prevent a vacuum being formed.
