A machine for sharpening band saws comprises a grinding wheel 3 directly coupled to the shaft of a driving motor 1, a pawl 5 actuated by a cam mechanism driven from a shaft 41 coupled to the motor shaft to move the saw blade tooth by tooth into grinding relationship with the wheel 13, the pawl being spring-loaded, and a movable work table 8 driven by further cam means and upon which the saw is held for sharpening. The shaft 41 is connected to the motor shaft by a worm drive 6, 7 and carries an exchangeable cam 19 to bear against a roller 10 and move the work table 8 according to the tooth profile to be ground and a cam 18, which through a roller 17, actuates a lever 16 carrying the pawl 5. The work table 8 rests on ball or roller bearing guides 9 and carries adjustable guides 35 and a spring-loaded wheel 33 to hold the saw blade. A handle 12 normally held in the position shown by a spring 45 is turned about its pivot 44 to engage a clutch 11 in the drive to the shaft 41 and is held in this position against the pressure of the spring 45 by a pin 47 which engages a slot 48 in a lever 49. A removable projection on the saw blade engages an adjustable trip member 51 after each complete turn to disengage the clutch. A handwheel 25 enables the machine to be tested before starting the motor. The machine case 40 may be adjusted transversely and longitudinally on the base 2 by means of control knobs 14, 14' to adapt the machine for different grinding depths and tooth contours. A third control knob 14" adjusts the fulcrum of the lever 16. Bearings 20 and 21 are provided to allow the shaft 41 to move with the case 40.
