Description

This invention relates to a bandsaw blade sharpener for small band saw blades Bandsaw blades at present can only be sharpened by very expensive industrial type machines which are uneconomical for the small furniture workshop and the DIY user to consider. Users of bandsaws find that blades get blunt quite quickly, therefore they save their blades for special cuts that no other machine can do so don't get the best use of their bandsaws.
The invention will sharpen bandsaw blades from 6mm to 30mm depth of blade and from 8 teeth to 2 teeth per 25mm. The invention will also re-cut teeth to half the number present eg (from 8 to 4 teeth per 25mm). The invention will also sharpen the teeth to either hook tooth or straight tooth configuration. The invention will also accommodate blades of right hand or left hand fed bandsaws. An angle grinder or suitable grinding machine is attached to the invention to provide a grinding head. The bandsaw blade is held in position with clamping bar 16 which is held in place by guide bars and springs 18. A screw 25 releases the clamping bar to enable the blade to be placed in position. Spring 20 returns motor platform to neutral position after grinding each tooth. Bolt 21 provides adjustable stop for motor platform. Bolt 23 provides adjustment for straight or hooked tooth sharpening. Bolts 22 provides lateral adjustment for motor platform. Stops 17 adjust to accommodate different depth of blades from 6mm to 25mm.
A specific embodiment of the bandsaw blade sharpener will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which : Figure 1 shows in perspective the bandsaw blade sharpener; Figure 2 shows chassis 10 backplate 11 and bandsaw blade holder 15; Figure 3 shows motor platform 12 and levers 14 and 19; Figure 4 shows bandsaw blade holder 15 with bandsaw blade 26 in positon clamped with clamping bar 16; Referring to the drawings the bandsaw blade sharpener comprises of chassis 10, backplate 11, motor platform 12 and blade holder assembly 15.
In order to sharpen a bandsaw blade, the blade is placed in the blade holder assembly 15. The end of lever 19 engages in the gullet of the saw blade.
Lever 14 advances a tooth to the sharpening position. Lever 19 is then withdrawn by the action of lever 14. The grinding motor (not shown) mounted on motor platform 12 is lowered to grind the tooth and is withdrawn ready for the advance of the next tooth. This combination of actions continues until all the teeth on the bandsaw blade have been sharpened.

Claims (7)

  1. CLAIMS 1 A bandsaw blade sharpener to sharpen bandsaw blades from 6mm to 30mm depth of blade and from 2 to 8 teeth per 25mm. The bandsaw blade sharpener will also re-cut teeth from 8 teeth per 25mm to 4 teeth per 25mm. The invention will also sharpen teeth to either hook or straight tooth configuration. The bandsaw blade sharpener will also accommodate blades from right hand and left hand fed bandsaws.
  2. 2 A bandsaw blade sharpener as in claim 1 with adjustable stops to control the travel of lever 14.
  3. 3 A bandsaw blade sharpener as in claim 1 or 2 with adjustable stop 21 to be able to limit the travel of motor platform 12.
  4. 4 A bandsaw blade sharpener as in claim 1 and 2 with adjustable pivots 22 to enable the motor platform 12 to be adjusted laterally.
  5. 5 A bandsaw blade sharpener as in all preceding claims with back plate 11 to pivot on bolt 23 to enable hook teeth and straight teeth to be sharpened.
  6. 6 A bandsaw blade sharpener as claimed in Claim 5 with spring loaded guide bars 18 to keep clamping bar 16 in position.
  7. 7 A bandsaw blade sharpener as described herein with reference to figures 1-4 of the accompanying drawing.
