Abstract

414,443. Grinding valves. KLEIN, O., 83, Uhlbacherstrasse, Obert³rkheim, Stuttgart, Germany. Feb. 20, 1933, No. 5212. [Class 60.] In a machine for grinding the seating surface of mushroom type valves, the grinding-wheel rotates on a stationary axis, and the valve is rotated and at the same time reciprocated to carry its seating surface across the operative surface of the grinding-wheel. The machine, Figs. 1, 3 and 4, comprises a grinding-wheel 3 mounted on a spindle 2 in a base 1, a second grinding-wheel also being mounted on the spindle for hand grinding of tools &c. The spindle 2 drives a shaft 4 which drives, through worm gearing 10, a vertical shaft 9 having at its lower end an eccentric pin 11 engaging a guide block 12 guided in a transverse slot 13 in a guide bar 7, thereby causing reciprocation of a valve head carrier 6 on a guide bar 8 and the bar 7. The shaft 9 also drives, through gearing 14, 15, a shaft 16 driving, through wormgearing 17, a valve holder 18 mounted in a casing 20, which is adjustable angularly, to suit the bevel of the valve, on a sleeve 19; in order that adjustment of the valve relatively to the grinding-wheel may not alter the angular setting of the valve, the sleeve 19 is rotatable in a part 22 of the carrier 6 and carries a gear 25 meshing through an idler gear 24, with a gear 23 keyed to a pin 21 coaxial with the shaft 9, the part 22 being moved about the pin 21 to adjust the position of the valve. The valve also may be adjusted parallel to the axis of the grinding-wheel by adjustment of the bar 7 by means of a screw 26, or by means of a screw-engaging the bar 7. In a modification, the valve holder is rotated by a flexible shaft, similar means to that described above being used to reciprocate the valve, and to adjust the holder parallel to the axis of the grinding-wheel. In a further modification, the grinding-wheel is adjustable transversely, and the valve driving mechanism comprises an electric motor driving the valve and, through gearing, operating the shaft to cause reciprocation of the valve ; the means for adjusting the valve parallel to the axis of the grinding-wheel is similar to that described above.
