In an apparatus for applying a layer of plastic material such as cream, jam, or jelly to articles of confectionery, such as biscuits or cakes, the articles are displaced, by dogs on a moving conveyer, engaging their rear edges along laterally spaced ramps, which support the articles over a minor area alone of their surfaces, and progressively past a stencil moving in synchronism therewith through the stencil openings in which a layer of plastic material is applied to the upper surfaces of the articles, the articles being supported by individual spring fingers in contact with the stencil, as they come into range of the stencil. In Figs. 1 and 2 biscuits 1 stacked in hopper 2 are removed by dogs 3 on a belt 4 and conveyed on ramps 8, 9, 10 and 11 to the rotating ported cylinder 12 from which the plastic material is applied to the biscuit. The biscuit then moves down the inclined portion 21 of the ramps, and, if desired, a biscuit may be removed from the bottom of the hopper 24 in order to form a sandwich biscuit with an intermediate layer of plastic material. In Fig. 3 the ported cylinder 12 with stencil openings 16 is mounted on a hollow shaft 13 from which the plastic material emerges into the delivery funnel 15, the biscuits 1 being supported against the surface of the cylinder by means of the spring fingers 19 on to which they are guided by the flexible guide 20.
