Abstract
Granular material is coated by mixing therewith a liquefied bituminous substance in the presence of an alkali metal silicate and a colloidal solution obtained by the complete hydrolytic decomposition of a protein. The bitumen may be liquefied by dissolution, heating or emulsification. Keratin is the preferred colloidal protein, and the amount of silicate preferred is 2 per cent. by weight of the keratin, the keratin itself amounting to 0.7 per cent. of the bitumen/keratin mixture. When the bitumen is an emulsion, an acid medium is desirable especially an acid tanning agent, e.g. iron sulphate solution plus basic chromium salts, which simultaneously preserves the colloidal protein solution. The sequence of mixing the different components may be varied. The treated emulsion can be diluted with original emulsion and if solvents or solvent-containing substances, e.g. cut back bitumens, are also added, the breaking of the emulsion can be controlled. Heating also affects breaking of the emulsion. The protein colloid may itself be tanned and, as such, used to coat the aggregate.
