Abstract

A composition suitable for flooring is prepared by dehydrating an aqueous emulsion or a mixture of aqueous emulsions of bitumen and polyvinyl acetate with a powdered inorganic material which sets irreversibly on moistening with water, the bitumen being of such a nature that it will mix with the polyvinyl acetate to produce a composition which can easily be trowelled. The bitumen may be a natural or artificial product, modified, if necessary, by the addition of petroleum residues, aromatic extracts, or heavy mineral oil, to give a penetration value of 60-500. The inorganic material may be Portland, titan, Roman, sorel, Keene's, parian or Scott's cement or cement powder, and reinforcing, shrinkage-controlling, and colouring agents may be added. The emulsion or mixture of emulsions is mixed in an edge-runner mixer with asbestos floats to coat each fibre with the bitumen and polyvinyl acetate and form a porridge-like mass which is added to the mixture of cement and other agents.
