Abstract
The coagulation of bituminous dispersions, after application to roads or other surfaces to be coated, is facilitated by the addition thereto of substances which, while having no action on the dispersions in bulk, react with the carbon dioxide of the atmosphere on spreading to form a coagulating agent. Suitable substances are alkali aluminates, plumbates, and zincates which by the reaction form the metal hydrates constituting the coagulating agents, together with sodium carbonate. Examples of the invention are as follow:--(1) Mexican asphalt is mixed with 0,5 per cent naphthenic acid and dispersed in water containing slightly more than the equivalent of sodium hydroxide; 0,5-2,0 per cent of a stabilizer such as gelatine, casein, or tannin is then added, followed by a 10 per cent solution of sodium aluminate in quantity equivalent to 0,01-2 per cent of the reagent reckoned on the asphalt. (2) The same quantity of reagent is added to a dispersion prepared with clay, bentonite or the like as dispersion agent.
