[Also in Group XXVI] Animal heads &c. are split by a power-operated cleaver blade 16 which moves in a straight path towards a support, each head being placed and held between spaced wedges 15 with a wood strip 12 between. The blade 16 is coupled to the end of a piston rod 21 moved down by compressed air piston 19 and raised by a piston 20. The compressed air is supplied through hand operated valves 32 and 34 both of which must be opened by an operator's hand on each for safety; on release of either of the handles 32a or 34a the lowering of the blades will be stopped and on release of both handles the upper end of cylinder 25 will be open to the atmosphere and air pressure under the piston 20 raises the assembly. The valve 34 exhausts to atmosphere through a pipe 39 if its handle only is released, whereby air pressure from the valve 32 through pipe 33 closes the valve 34f the stem of which presses on and rocks the handle 34a anti-clockwise to open the valve 34g to atmospheric pipe 39. To prevent accidental lowering of a guillotine, leakage of pressure air from the raising cylinder 26 to the top of the lowering piston 19, is prevented by a gland around the piston rod 21. Such gland comprises upper and lower U-section packing rings 42, spaced by a ring 43 spread open by wedge rings 46 and the action of pressure air through bores 47. Any leakage passes through radial holes in the spacer ring 43 to exhaust through a bore 45 to atmosphere. The pistons are similarly made air-tight by a single U-section ring and a wedge section ring spreading by air pressure.
